The promise didn't end with one family. Other people heard it, and joined it.

Mike grew up in a Stockton firehouse from the age of two, and firefighting always found its way back to him. He started Delta Fire Recovery Dive Team with his own savings, and went looking for a diver once he realized finding someone underwater isn't the same as recovering them — that's how he met Kyle. The team trains in conditions nobody else does, because, as Mike puts it, anything less is "just wearing a costume."

"Every mission we do since Lupita is because of her. What do I hope families feel when we arrive? That they're not alone."

Ana is a mother of four, including a nonverbal son with special needs — an experience that taught her resilience long before Delta Fire existed. She's married to Kyle, one of the team's divers. Her role on scene isn't technical: she sits with families, translates, and holds their hand through the parts no equipment can reach.

"I know how it feels to go through a hard time and turn around and see nobody standing next to you. So it's important to me that when a family is going through this, they know somebody cares — and they're not alone."
